Fossil Stingray Heliobatis

This fossil stingray (Heliobatis sp.) is preserved with detail, including the distinctive circular body outline and radiating cartilage structures typical of early rays. Heliobatis is one of the earliest known stingrays and provides important insight into the evolution of cartilaginous fishes.

Fossils like this formed in calm freshwater lake environments, where fine sediments allowed even delicate skeletal features to be preserved.
